How to Look After Your Coloured Hair at Home
Whether you go for a bold pastel colour or brunette, colouring your hair can completely transform your look. However, it’s important to consider the condition of your hair and the impact colouring has on it.
If you dye your hair too frequently with hair dyes containing harsh chemicals, it can cause the hair to become dry and damaged – not a good look!
At Strand & Lock, we use Aveda organic hair colour which is composed of up to 93% natural ingredients and free from harsh chemicals. Have a read of our recent blog all about Aveda natural hair colour to find out more!
While we take care of your coloured hair in the salon, this doesn’t mean you can just leave it be when you get home. By putting in a bit of effort, you can help maintain your hair’s condition and keep the colour vibrant. Particularly important at the moment whilst salons are closed!

Choose the right shampoo and conditioner
When you have coloured hair, you can’t simply go for any old shampoo designed for all hair types. You should pick a shampoo that is specifically designed for coloured hair and will provide the special care it needs.
We love Aveda’s Color Conserve™ Shampoo which protects colour-treated hair from damage, keeps it vibrant and most importantly, makes it silky and soft!
Don’t forget to use a nourishing conditioner such as Aveda’s Color Conserve™ Conditioner. It helps to seal hair cuticles to lock in colour and shine, whilst getting rid of any pesky tangles.
If you are suffering from brassiness, we also recommend using Aveda’s Blue Malva Shampoo one or two times per week. It will help to add silvery brightness to grey hair and neutralize any of those unwanted brassy tones.
Use a hair treatment once a week
To give your coloured hair the moisture it needs, we advise using a conditioning hair treatment once per week. This could be in the form of a leave-in conditioner, strengthening treatment or hair mask.
Aveda’s Color Conserve™ Strengthening Treatment contains macadamia and sunflower oils which deeply nourish and strengthen the hair. Apply it evenly to damp hair and leave in for two to five minutes.
Your hair will be left feeling silky soft and smell delicious – win-win!
Shampoo less frequently
While using a colour-friendly shampoo and conditioner can help to prevent fading, it’s not going to help if you are washing your hair too much. So, if you’re used to washing it daily, you may want to rethink this.
Stick to washing it two to three times per week if possible. You can also use colour-friendly dry shampoo to keep the hair feeling fresh between washes.
Protect your hair from the sun
While it may still be winter in the UK, springtime is just around the corner and you will have more exposure to the sun.
If you don’t keep your colour hair protected when in the sun, it can result in fading and make it dry and damaged. You can opt for a protective hair oil such as Aveda’s Sun Care Protective Hair Veil, a lightweight UV defence mist that protects hair from sun exposure.
If you don’t want to have to worry about applying any products, you can always just wear a hat to cover up and protect those tresses.
Avoid using too much heat
Since coloured hair is susceptible to damage, you’ll want to avoid using hair tongs, straighteners or hairdryers too much. Where possible, we recommend leaving your hair to dry naturally.
If you are going to use heat, be sure to apply a heat-protecting styling product all over the hair. Make sure you stick to the lower heat setting on your blow dryer or hair straightener to avoid any unwanted damage.
