How to Style Your Hair: For Men
Men’s hairstyling can often be difficult, but with the right technique and hair styling products you’ll be able to style your hair effortlessly each day.
Depending on your hair type and particular hairstyle, this practical guide has all the best hair care steps that you can take to ensure a perfect look every time. Before you know it, your scruffy bedhead look will be a thing of the past.
Wash Your Hair
It is not essential that you wash your hair every time you want to style it but, generally speaking, it is a lot easier to style your hair when it’s freshly washed. So, if you’ve got somewhere special to be, it might be worth saving your hair wash until then! Timing is everything, as they say.
Shampooing your hair is essential, as it will cleanse the scalp and get rid of any product build-up from any previous styling. Conditioning, however, is often overlooked, and it shouldn’t be.
Although it’s true that conditioner especially benefits men with longer hair (as when the hair gets longer it becomes easier for the ends to get damaged or split), guys with any length of hair will benefit from using conditioner. With regular use, your hair will be stronger, look healthier and shinier, and most importantly, be style ready!
Use a Blow Dryer
If you have shorter or finer hair, then you might find that your hair dries naturally quite quickly. But if your hair is longer or thicker, it might take a while for it to dry, which can be frustrating if you need to style your hair in a hurry.
A blow dryer is great and can actually be a good step in the styling process. Firstly, apply some heat protectant spray. We recommend the Aveda Heat Relief Thermal Protector & Conditioning Mist, which will protect your hair from heat up to 450 degrees whilst conditioning it, too (an added bonus).
Then, brush your hair in the direction you would like to style it. Simply blow dry your hair in this direction and you’re good to go!
Select Your Hair Products and Style Accordingly
Finally, the most important part of styling your hair is the products you choose to use. It might be hard to know what products to use in men’s hair, but we’ve broken it down for you with some of our go-to products:
GEL
If you like your hair to look slick and shiny, then a gel is perfect for you. It’s really easy to use as it is easily distributed throughout the hair. Once you have applied the gel, it will stiffen and give a stronghold. If you’re someone who touches or fiddles with their hair often, using gel is the perfect solution as it won’t budge.
If you’re looking for a great hair gel to try, the Aveda Pure-Formance Firm Hold Gel is really lightweight but has amazing hold.
POMADE
Pomades have become a lot more popular in recent years due to the fact that they give you a very natural look.
If you have thick or long hair, then pomades are great for holding your style in place. However, if you have very short or fine hair, then it might be best to steer clear from pomades. This is because they can make your hair appear flat, or stick to your scalp.
The Aveda Pure-Formance Pomade is a good choice, or if you want to try something a little different, the Aveda Pure-Formance Liquid Pomade is brilliant if you want some added shine.
WAX
Hair wax is a great styling product if you like a very strong hold with lots of shine. Again, they aren’t ideal for fine hair as a wax-based product can build up very easily. You can also use wax on your moustache or beard if you want a bit of extra hold or style.
CREAM
For those with shorter or finer hair, hair cream is a better option. It has a lower hold, but you should find that you don’t need to opt for a stronger hold option since your hair will be much lighter.
The cream will also give you a very natural look so that your hair will look effortlessly styled.
To add moisture and definition to your hair, why not try the Aveda Pure-Formance Grooming Cream? It will give you a natural, healthy-looking shine, too.
CLAY
We’ve been through a lot of options that give you a shiny finish, but if you prefer a super-matte look, then a mattifying hair clay could be for you.
You can even opt to use a little bit of clay alongside other styling products if you want to mattify your look slightly. Or simply use it on its own, as it does tend to give a strong hold without the need for other products.
We recommend the Aveda Pure-Formance Grooming Clay if you’re looking for a hair clay to try out for yourself. It’s lightweight formula makes it extremely pliable, which is exactly what you want when creating your look.
