Top Hair Trends for Women in 2021

Looking to freshen up your style but aren’t sure where to start?

We’ve got some upcoming trends that we’re absolutely loving for 2021, ranging from low maintenance looks to ‘more is more’.

From cuts that are making a comeback to the latest on-trend colours, we have you covered.

With lockdown restrictions easing in the UK, it’s certainly time to shake things up with these top hair trends for women in 2021. Scroll to find out which looks are reigning supreme this year.

1. Modern Shag

Celebrity barber and hairstylist Paul McGregor originally created the shag haircut in the 1970s for the actress Jane Fonda, and now it’s making a comeback!

A brilliant aspect of the shag haircut is that it’s a universal style that suits all hair lengths, face shapes and textures, so it’s perfect for both men and women.

The shag’s defining features include lots of layers at the crown of the head which give major volume to the hair, while the choppy ends create lots of added texture.

There’s little need for styling if you have naturally curly hair, but if you have naturally straight hair, we recommend a texturising spray to enhance the shag’s tousled, effortless look. Aveda’s Texturising Tonic is great for creating an effortlessly ‘undone’ look.

This haircut would also be perfect for you if you’re someone who’s looking for a low maintenance cut with a rock chick vibe, as this look screams effortlessly chic.

2. Shadow Roots

With salons being shut during lockdown, maintaining a bright blonde has been extremely difficult and your roots might even be a few inches long by now.

However, the good news is that having a darker root is in right now!

A shadow root blends together with your natural root colour with the rest of your hair (usually when it is a lighter shade), to give a more seamless finish.

This is such a low maintenance look and adds a lot of dimension to the hair.

If you’re a bombshell blonde suffering from major lockdown roots, this hair colour might be for you!

3. Curtain Bangs

Worn famously by French actress Brigitte Bardot in the 60s, this type of fringe has already made a huge comeback! Like Bardot herself, curtain bangs are untamed, flirty, and free.

Curtain bangs are long sweeping bangs that are parted down the middle and beautifully frame the face. They are particularly great for people with square or round face shapes, as they help to make the face appear elongated. Plus, they’re low maintenance as you can easily let them grow out into longer layers.

However, one thing you do need to watch out for is that styling curtain bangs can sometimes be tricky at home. It is best to take a round blow-dry brush and dry the hair in the direction you want your bangs to sweep.

To really add volume and hold to the style, you can finish off with the Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Hair Spray.

4. Classic Bob

You may have noticed that short haircuts are dominating at the moment. Not only is a bob hairstyle timeless and easy to style, but committing to a big chop is also a fantastic way to freshen up your look!

Typically, the length of a bob is anywhere between the ears and the shoulders. There are also different ways of cutting the hair into a bob to give you different looks. For example, a blunt cut would give a very straight, sleek look, whereas an inverted bob is cut shorter at the back and longer at the front.

With so many variations, a bob will suit just about anyone! It’s another great low-maintenance style that always looks bang on-trend.

5. Curly Bangs

This one is for those with well defined, springy curls and coils with lots of texture. They offer a fun, flirty and effortless look and draw attention to the eyes.

The best way to care for your curly bangs is to use a diffuser to dry the hair. This will ensure your curls stay looking well-defined and also adds plenty of volume.

For extra moisture and curl definition, why not try the Aveda Be Curly Style Prep spray? This pre-styling treatment creates the perfect foundation for curly hairstyles as it seals the cuticle to tame frizz all day.

6. Glossing

If you have coloured hair, why not add amazing shine? Glossy hair is a trend that makes the hair look more vibrant and healthy whilst adding a glossy finish.

Glossing is a temporary hair treatment that is usually paired with a colour service. By glossing the hair, it makes the hair colour last longer as well as helping the condition by reducing split ends.

We’ve seen this trend before with the Kardashian’s signature black glossy hair looks, but we think it’s a great way to subtly freshen up your locks in 2021.

7. Creative Colours

This last trend is for those who are looking for a bolder, more creative and experimental look.

Pops of colour can be added to the hair in different places, for example dying the underneath of the hair has been very popular, as well as streaks of colour at the front of the face.

If you’re feeling brave, you could always opt for an all-over colour. A tint of bright red or copper is currently an upcoming trend that might be perfect for you.

There’s a colour to suit everyone! 2021 is the year to experiment.
